Preventative Care?

For most of the past 100 years, the mainstream medical approach to health was to wait until sicksomeone was ill before treating them. This is not surprising. After all, it would seem odd to be treated if you are well, don’t you think?

However, over the past 3 or so decades, an alternative health movement emerged in the western world. A curious notion known as “preventative” approaches to caring for your body emerged. Interestingly, this alternative – or preventative — movement had been around in the eastern world for centuries and was even the western world’s traditional healing style prior to the “come in when you’re sick” approach it has today.

What is Alternative Healthcare?

Quite simply it is anything that is not exactly like the “get sick first” approach of the emergency room. ambulance If the current western model is an ambulance at the bottom of the hill, alternative healthcare is a fence at the top. Why let someone get sick in the first place? We don’t line the bottom of a cliff with ambulances do we? So why take this approach with any other aspect of health?

We tell people not to smoke or eat unhealthy foods because we understand the value of not waiting until emphesyma or heart disease drives people to the emergency room? We are beginning to awaken to the notion of seeking maximum health instead of flirting with disaster or just “getting by.” Most people are unhappy living pay cheque to pay cheque. So why treat your health any differently?

How Can I Treat My Body with Alternative Healthcare?

My patients are well aware of my love for alternative — or preventative — healthcare. I consistently attempt to put my patients in a place where they do not simply come to get treatment when they are in pain. The goal of my practice is to place them in a state of well being. This is done by implementing the following strategies:

1. STOP hurting yourself! Most patients hurt themselves without knowing it. They are lifting wrong or sitting incorrectly throughout their work day and damaging their spines. Educating them on how not to hurt themselves is priority number one!

2. Get STRONG! Corrective exercises will make your body more resilient and increase your pain threshold. Every single one of my patients is given a home therapy and home exercise program to make them stronger for life.

3. Stay on top! Don’t wait until you are in pain to get treated. Periodic treatments that include soft tissue work, stretching and joint mobilization (or manipulation) are the maintenance care of the body. We apply this to all of our important investments. We periodically run virus scans to protect our computers, we get our expensive bicycles tuned up and our oil changed for our vehicles. Do the same for the single most important machine you own: your body!

I greatly encourage all of my patients to apply an alternative approach to¬† their health. Get strong, get well, and stay that way. You don’t ever have to visit the “dark side” of health if you don’t want to.

MMA and Dr Parenteau

No, Dr. Parenteau is not a Mixed Martial Artist. I would love to be that tough, but alas, I’m more medical than mercenary. However, the MMA success has highlighted a principle that I use in the clinic.

The combination of different styles in order to create a new, hybridized system that is more effective than any single discipline on its own.

How Does Dr. Parenteau Do This?

Our clinic is entitled Pain Relief & Rehabilitation because we are exactly that: rehabilitation focused. It is not a chiropractic, physiotherapy, exercise rehab or athletic therapy centre.

It’s all four.

We are licensed to use all physiotherapy equipment (ultrasound, interferrential current, etc). We also use athletic therapy principles (e.g.: clinician assisted stretching, diagnosis of sports injury, taping, etc).

Further the majority of the clinic is exercise equipment and open exercise space. We focus on exercise rehabilitation as the primary vehicle of recovery.

We tend to prescribe customized home exercises and therapies to have patients be able to stay well all by themselves.

As a chiropractor, I practice myofascial release (aka: active release) and traditional joint manipulation. I can order x-rays or MRI’s if need be.

When patients walk through the doors, they will receive one or more of the above treatment disciplines. It all depends on what they need. There is no cookie cutter approach.

We want maximum results in minimum time. And have designed our system to deliver that by any means necessary.

Thank you and best of luck,
Dr. Parenteau

No. We are not crazy.

We’ve been doing this for years and never thought to let anyone know. At least not so bluntly.

Our clinic specializes in curing low back pain, not in managing it and keeping people coming back for never ending maintenance care. Having suffered from low back pain myself, I (Dr. Parenteau) know how we can feel controlled by pain and see our freedom diminish.

It is very easy for healthcare professionals to capitalize on someone in pain. Drug companies do this and it is obvious to us that it is wrong.

Very wrong.

What a healthcare professional should be doing is curing the problem, not capitalizing on it for the remainder of a patient’s lifespan.

“How do you get rid of patients?”

We make them pain free. Without pain, people don’t come to our clinic.

Nor should they.

We have a growing list of testimonials of people who have “tried everything” and never gotten better until they came to us. They kept going to different practitioners hoping they would be cured. Instead they only got “managed.”

“So what’s so special about you that you ‘cure’ them?”

Very simply, we tell them they can be independent from care. And then we teach them to be. It is against the instincts of any business to work themselves out of a job. But we do exactly that. People do need our services. But not forever. An emergency room does not keep you once you’re better. Nor should they.

Once the patient is better, they are taught the corrective exercises, ergonomic adjustments and activity modification (or cessation) that they need in order to live pain free.

Most low back pain is not a mysterious ailment that lasts a lifetime. Unless you are unwilling to take charge and make the changes necessary to correct the problem.

Many practitioners could set people free if their goal was to do so.

Ours is that very goal.

“That sounds TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE! Don’t SOME back patients need on-going care?”

All back patients need on going care.

But what if that care was their altered lifestyle.

You don’t eat healthy just once, but as a lifestyle. Very few patients need on going care. Sure, some do. Often these patients have had a re-injury or they’ve been too busy to do their exercises. We welcome them back so they can “get back on the horse.”

If you want to overcome your low back pain. Let us know…
